My name is Pat Hamrick and I have loved and been loved by Chihuahuas for over 50 years. I started showing my chihuahuas about 6 years ago.
My first show dog came to me from my friend Shirley who had bred a chihuahua that she had shown for her friend Mike Philip. When CH Salinacruz She's the Best had a litter of puppies, Mike let me have the only female. I was thrilled with her and she has never let me down. Her name is GRCH Daggot's Diamond in the Ruff and hence began my fun of showing Chihuahuas. Shirley and I have traveled to many dog shows together over the past 7 years and had a wonderful time. She has done an excellent job of showing my dogs for me. Shirley doesn't like to loose and always shows my dogs as if they were her own. I am grateful that I have such a wonderful friend. We could not go to as many dog shows as we do if it were not for the great help that we get from our families who stay home and care for the rest of our kennels while we are away. At my house, I need to thank my husband Max who supports me and covers for me while I am away. He is my greatest fan. I am lucky that I have found a man who allows 14 dogs in his lap at once. Also, I need to thank my grandson Hunter and granddaughter Dee who lovingly accept grandma's absences and help her to keep things in order at home. I would also like to thank my son Patrick and his family who pick up the slack when I am away. Finally, I must thank Zena Myall who helps Shirley and myself in so very many ways. Any problem that we have, Zena is there to help us solve.
Owning chihuahuas for so many years before showing them has made me approach the breed in a different way. An English judge once told me that a chihuahua should move like a draft horse. Most people are surprised to hear that but I agree. Good reach and drive is essential to the total package in the breed. Movement is what I look for first. As a lover of this breed, nothing makes me get goose bumps faster than seeing a good balanced chihuahua moving around the show ring. I have been lucky to be able to start showing with dogs who have good balance. So many people who own this wonderful little dog carry it everywhere. They need to get plenty of exercise every day. It develops their muscle structure which gives them balance. Chihuahuas are a hearty breed living to be 20 or more years old. Anyone who is considering one for a pet needs to realize that this is a long term relationship. Chihuahuas bond closely with their human. They give you all that they have in love and devotion. They expect the same in return.
I have a small kennel and breed a couple of litters each year to get a good show dog. I occasionally have puppies who are healthy, happy and well socialized for sale. On occasion a nice older dog also becomes available because I do not have the room to keep them all. I often hear of other available puppies and older dogs because of my association with other chihuahua lovers. You are welcome to contact me.
